my new love.

I was definitely spoiled on Christmas this year, the Mamiya C33 being the main reason. I finally shot my first roll with it this past week and it works amazing. I'm in love! Even though my first roll with it was motivated by one of my photography class assignments, it was still a joyful experience. It was also my first time using the lighting studio.

Here are a few shots from the roll.

The whole concept is to choose an object and place in various lighting situations, while being aware of composition and abstracting the object.

I think for my first time working with my mamiya and in the lighting studio, my roll is not too bad. I was definitely not disappointed.

exchange, exchange, exchange.

It's that time of year (once again) where I will be applying for exchange for Fall 2010 semester. I had a meeting with my advisor last week just to clarify everything that needs to be done for the application deadline Monday, February 15, 2010.

I have final narrowed down my choices to the final three schools.

1. Fashion Institute of Technology (NYC)

2. School of the Art Institute of Chicago

3. California College of the Arts (San Francisco)

Fingers crossed I will be accepted into at least one.

Now that my schools have been selected its time to edit and alter my portfolio. Since i'm only in my second semester with a concentration on fashion, somehow I have to prove my knowledge and capabilities in fashion. The remainder of my portfolio will consist of a lot of graphic design work and photography. I am hoping that my portfolio illustrates my stengths as an interdisciplinary artist through knowledge in fine art, design, photography and fashion. All these areas play a crucial role in how I approach my work today and I think that is an important aspect that should be portrayed through my collection of work.

Although I'm still going through my work and trying to select a diverse group of pieces, so far these are pieces that I think will make the final cut.

creative framing.

This was a minor assignment for my photography class called creative framing. Basically creating a mosaic image with one roll of 36 exposure film. The end result is your contact sheet -- revealing one large image from the contributing 36 individual shots. I would definitely like to explore this more. With a lot of planning there is possibilities for creating odd shapes, forms and illusions. There is definitely an element of surprise that comes along with this way of photographing.

farewell for now.

Today was the final photoshoot for our final projects in Fiber, Fabric, Fashion. With the endless amounts of tying, knotting and braiding frabric and wire, I think my overall look came together successfully. If there was more time I would have definitely continued with the main garment and had it drape to the floor. My main concept was to display simple techniques and their ability to become complex and beautiful textures in mass amounts. Using only two materials, white fabric and wire, the focus clearly lies on the various ways the materials are manipulated.

The amount of freedom given for this project resulted in very different and creative projects from other students.

the last seven days.

Its the final seven days of the fall semester and to no surprise starbucks has become the crutch to get me to the end. The fashion studio has become my home and with a london fog constantly at my side its hard to complain.

I have somewhat satisfied my onesie obsession by designing and constructing two for the final projects in Pattern Drafting and Fashion Construction. I must admit I am pretty impressed that I was able to translate my designs into actual garments with this being my first semester studying fashion. For Pattern Drafting the task was to develop a full resolved pattern for a chosen model accompanied by a mock-up of the design. Kindly my friend Colleen agreed to be my model. Literally becoming familiar with every inch of my model, I was able to design

a working pattern for a full on onesie.

Even though its only a mock-up version (no seam finishes or closures) of the design to test the pattern, I think its pretty cute.

For Fashion Construction I was able to spoil myself by designing and constructing a jumper using my personal measurements. Having a piece of clothing that is tailored to your size is very pleasing. Although there were some frustrations during the production (I have built up a love hate relationship for zippers), this jumper is definitely an excellent addition to my wardrobe and will be sported during the Christmas holidays!

With those two projects completed this last week will be spent on my final projects for Fiber, Fabric, Fashion and Photo.

The final project for FFF has a lot of room for play and creativity. I have chose to create a garment created only with white fabric and wire. Throughout the entire term, what has really sparked my interest in FFF is the simplest techniques that produce such beautiful and complex results. So for the past week or so I have devoted a lot of time to braiding, tying, knotting, braiding, tying, knotting, knotting, knotting, braiding, and tying. But diving into these tedious techniques has made room for time spent watching christmas movies. So really there is no need to whine.

I have almost completed the main garment, all thats left to do is the accompanying head piece and footwear. There is still more tedious work to be done, and a few more christmas movies I wouldn't mind watching.

Photo is starting to wrap up. After many rolls of film spent on this series, only two more photographs are needed. The darkroom has become crowded with frantic photo students, so I will be waiting until the rush has passed and the darkroom returns back to a quiet escape. This weekend will be devoted to me and the darkroom.

So in seven days I will be handing in my last final project for the semester. Then it will be time to pack up my things and prepare to head back home for the holidays.

Can't wait!
